What Do Motor Oil Viscosity Ratings Mean?

If you’re trying to decide on the best motor oil for your car, it may benefit you to remember a few basic points. The first is that viscosity simply refers to the oil’s thickness. The second thing is to consider is the type of driving you’ll be doing and during which season. From there, just remember that cold weather requires thin fluid, or low viscosity, and hot weather needs a thick, or high viscosity, fluid.

A bottle of multi-grade motor oil informs you of that oil’s viscosity in both cold and hot conditions. A 10W40 oil, for instance, indicates that 10 is its maximum viscosity in cold conditions. It should be lower for easier flow. The W simply means winter. The 40 reveals the viscosity range that oil should be in during hot conditions.
